Abstract

SAP Business Warehouse (BW) and SAP HANA have supported mission-critical analytics for more than two decades, embedding historical data, transformation logic, delta-processing behavior, business hierarchies, reconciliations, authorization models, and reporting dependencies. In 2026, the modernization question has changed. SAP BW 7.5 approaches the end of mainstream maintenance in 2027, while SAP BW/4HANA has a substantially longer lifecycle. At the same time, SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) has expanded the modernization landscape through governed data products, a managed BW object store, SAP Databricks, SAP Snowflake, and cross-cloud interoperability. SAP BDC Connect for BigQuery became generally available in July 2026, while SAP and partners continue to expand zero-copy and bidirectional sharing patterns [1]–[8].

This article argues that Business Data Cloud, lakehouse and hyperscaler architectures should not be treated as mutually exclusive destinations. They increasingly represent composable layers. The central decision is therefore not where the entire BW system should move, but where business semantics should be governed, where data should reside, where each workload should execute, and how trusted information should be consumed by BI, machine learning and AI agents.

To support that decision, the article proposes a Semantic-First BW Modernization Decision Framework (SBMDF) using three measures: Semantic Gravity Index (SGI), Cloud Innovation Pressure (CIP), and Migration Risk Score (MRS). A worked workload portfolio demonstrates how these measures lead to different modernization patterns: preservation, BDC evolution, hybrid coexistence, cloud-native refactoring, and retirement. The resulting strategy is a governed distributed architecture that preserves valid SAP semantics while modernizing execution where the business case is strongest.
